Lackadaisical

Last week my mom was flooded out of her home by a burst pipe. Having some experience with this kind of thing, I helped her with her home.

Anyway, I find myself with a weird dilemma. Nude pics.

Lots of nude pics.

Don’t get me wrong, ladies. As problems go, it’s an interesting one to have. But on the flip side, I have people who don’t want me to draw them because they think I only draw naked women!

As some of you have noticed, that’s not true. But because I draw a lot of fitness types, well…they are proud of the work and rightly so. Oh well. Guess I’ll have to get more creative.

Wouldn’t want to be considered a one trick pony.

Halloween

I made it! A buttload of pictures were completed for #inktober! Including a very special one…

So, it’s never come up but I have a couple of wily and fun ginger sisters in my life. I’ve drawn them before as Jean Grey and Dark Phoenix; it seemed appropriate, given the personalities involved. But one of them REALLY loves Halloween. So… I made her the Goblin Queen!

I started out with a couple of thumbnails to get the design I wanted.

Then I did a rough sketch. This is when I decided to add a pet goblin. A queen needs her subjects!

After doing a clean line version of my image and choosing a pallet, I begin coloring, doing the leather and skintones first.

Next came the cape. If you know the character, you know her original design by Marc Silvestri was very sketch and tattered looking. I didn’t want to go THAT far, but still wanted to stay in the spirit of the original.

Next I added some background accents. I was going to make it feel a little more Dante at first, with suffering souls and all that. But I decided against it.

Finally I added an appropriate sidekick and made sure all of the focal light fell on the main character.

My friend was really happy with her gift. But I’m no dummy. I have to draw the other one soon. They ARE sisters after all.

Double Down Wide

Another week down, one more to go! It’s been fun so far and I intend to finish the next three days off right!

There were days of colour and I enjoyed those most of all. I’ve been selling my house and it’s a little hard to get in rhythm when you have to leave every couple of hours!

Couple that with the fact that my VERY supportive local Starbucks has been closed for renovations and it makes things extremely difficult.

Oh well…

I still managed to knock out a few good drawings (and a couple of poorly done concepts, ugh), so overall I’m pleased.

Who knows? Maybe next year I’ll stick with the official theme of the group or maybe tell a self contained story within the allotted time.

All I can promise for certain is that I will be drawing, alive or not. It’s my function 😉

All the Stars

Hope you guys had a great weekend! They’re always so short, huh? Anyway here’s an hour of my Saturday…

I’ve been asked before about why I don’t do more complicated pieces. Mostly it’s because I tend to draw for my personal enjoyment. Recently though, I’ve had a few things pop into my head; I just don’t know what format that I would want to use.

Oh well…I suppose that I could go back to digital. It’s just that I spend all day working on projects that way. And I have about 48 motorcycles that I may have to draw!

Wish me luck! 🙀

Asphyxiation

I have had a crazy couple of weeks! First, I went to work for a new company and they were really awesome people. Then, I was hired by the federal government! Yep, pension, benefits and horrible commuting! Today is actually my first day.

So I drew this weekend. A LOT.

The mustang is from a photo that I took at a car show. I was trying to combine my style with that of another artist, whose look I admire. Hopefully it comes off pretty well.

Next, since the CrossFit games were on, I decided to do a strong lady flexing. If you know me you know I’m all about those, lol…

For an old classmate, I did a commission of our high school mascot. It’s been a while since I’ve drawn animals, but people seem to like them.

Then there’s THIS abomination. Ugh. I drew this and the whole body is drifting towards the right because I held the tablet on my knee. ALWAYS do your work properly, kids. Lesson learned.😑

Anyway, that was that. I had fun and got rid of some of my nerves. Wish me luck!

Unmore

If someone asked you for a “really quick” image, for free, how would you respond? Now make it a total stranger. What would you do?

I went ahead and did it.

I can’t explain why I did. It could be because I was drifting on my actual project and needed the distraction. Or maybe I felt sorry for the kid. Either way, they got an image made on typing paper.

It was nice and definitely pulled me out of my funk. It also reminded me that I could work faster than I had been…

…but there was still an image to get back to. I couldn’t just spend all my time playing around so in the end, they got this:

Maybe next time I’ll say no. We’ll see.

Throw Away Day

As usual, I find myself drawing without a customer or goal in mind. Actually after seeing Black Widow’s new look in the avengers movie, I suddenly remembered the first Avenger female in leather that I ever saw on the big screen; Emma Peele, played by Uma Thurman. If you don’t remember it or the TV show, that’s fine.

People tend to expect me to draw things that they’re familiar with, but the best part of being a nerd is having parts of pop culture that were ignored in your head. When I drew this everyone thought I was doing Black Widow! But if I always made what was expected, then I’m no longer an artist.

So yeah… sometimes you don’t get to be as original as you’d like, but as long as you keep your mind open, you can find your own spin for everything.

Effort[less]

Tattoos. I am not a tattoo artist. But I am going to the Baltimore Tattoo Convention to hang out and meet with several. Should be fun!

I love that I can make markers look like watercolours. It’s been awhile since I’ve used that particular skillset. What do you guys think? Want to see me do a few?

Anyway, I apparently have a new model who is sitting on my deck right now, hahaha. Have a great week!

Kill

Man, it’s getting to be a hassle to find art time nowadays! This started out as an example; draw a scene as an exercise. I had no idea what would come from it!

After posting it into several groups that I’m a member of, someone contacted me and wanted to know my “page rate” . Durr?

I asked others about this innocently expecting a simple answer. Because I never learn. Because I believe in humans.

Because I’m dumb.

Next thing I know, I’m being blasted with hate mail! “You didn’t invent #killbill”, “that’s intellectual property”, “you’re a hack”….it went on and on.

Ugh. “Okay so BECAUSE someone liked my practice page, they asked me to draw THEIR ORIGINAL COMIC. Also, learn reading comprehension, assholes”, I replied.

So, I finally got some decent advice and discovered that the person asking had two other artists who hadn’t been paid for work rendered. I gave up.

I’ll draw what I want.
