Halloween

I made it! A buttload of pictures were completed for #inktober! Including a very special one…

So, it’s never come up but I have a couple of wily and fun ginger sisters in my life. I’ve drawn them before as Jean Grey and Dark Phoenix; it seemed appropriate, given the personalities involved. But one of them REALLY loves Halloween. So… I made her the Goblin Queen!

I started out with a couple of thumbnails to get the design I wanted.

Then I did a rough sketch. This is when I decided to add a pet goblin. A queen needs her subjects!

After doing a clean line version of my image and choosing a pallet, I begin coloring, doing the leather and skintones first.

Next came the cape. If you know the character, you know her original design by Marc Silvestri was very sketch and tattered looking. I didn’t want to go THAT far, but still wanted to stay in the spirit of the original.

Next I added some background accents. I was going to make it feel a little more Dante at first, with suffering souls and all that. But I decided against it.

Finally I added an appropriate sidekick and made sure all of the focal light fell on the main character.

My friend was really happy with her gift. But I’m no dummy. I have to draw the other one soon. They ARE sisters after all.

Throw Away Day

As usual, I find myself drawing without a customer or goal in mind. Actually after seeing Black Widow’s new look in the avengers movie, I suddenly remembered the first Avenger female in leather that I ever saw on the big screen; Emma Peele, played by Uma Thurman. If you don’t remember it or the TV show, that’s fine.

People tend to expect me to draw things that they’re familiar with, but the best part of being a nerd is having parts of pop culture that were ignored in your head. When I drew this everyone thought I was doing Black Widow! But if I always made what was expected, then I’m no longer an artist.

So yeah… sometimes you don’t get to be as original as you’d like, but as long as you keep your mind open, you can find your own spin for everything.

Yay! I actually got permission to post my digital art! Maybe I was wrong to give the choice, but I feel that portraits are kinda personal.

I’ve been so busy with repairing my home. It’s a little over one hundred years old and it’s last update was in the 80’s. I’m not trying to go too modern, but things like floor sag and bad rafters come before the pretty stuff. Foundations first!

Maybe I should just enjoy this period of my life. After all, it hasn’t been this quiet in a long time. No impending doom, just everyday things. I should be content.

Ha! Who am I fooling? Even though it’s true, that’s just not my nature. After a decade of nothing but one emergency after another, there is no way I could fully believe that calm waters are ahead. But is that experience or paranoia?

I gave up on happy. It abandoned me. My world has been mostly grey with occasional flashes of color. I’ve come to accept it, even appreciate those rare instances.

Was I wrong? Could it be?

Here’s the truth; I WANT to be. I really do. I know it’s a little like giving up on life the way I live. But I’m not sorry. It’s my way of… I’m getting my affairs in order. That’s all I’ve been doing. Stalling in the hopes that it isn’t necessary, but keeping my distance from life so that I won’t mind parting with it.

    Dammit.

Okay. I need to start doing more than getting by. I need to find joy in little things. Like my art. It doesn’t need to be complicated because now I know what I want!
  I want to be.

Enthusiastic

I’ve been so busy writing the script for my short comic! It’s a little daunting, but I feel that I did a decent job.

Now I have two weeks to do storyboards. I’m pretty excited for this part. Some of the images have been in my head the entire time, so I’m happy to put them on paper.

Of course, this means I am going to be SUPER busy next month. Hopefully you guys will be following along as I create my first comic!

So if you enjoy what I bring, keep checking in for more updates!

Hope you guys had a happy holiday! Mine was average, but a day off can be it’s own reward, so I won’t complain. In fact, it actually lead to me doing a fun little piece of art this weekend!

Remember how I told you guys that I’d joined a little sketchbook group before? No? Well whose fault is that!? Damn kids…anyway, it got me to thinking about all the art connections I could make online.

For artists, cosplayers are a godsend. They are always ready to pose for pictures, are friendly about explaining the source material and best of all, LOVE the idea of someone drawing them as their roles. That last one is a huge help to me, so I decided to join a community and see if anyone was willing to do so. I got a lot of takers!

Clearly the paying work comes first, no question. But how can I resist when someone this cute wants me to draw her?

As you can see, things moved right along on the image. It took about 6 hours, with me making myself not stare out my window. This one has a little more fun to it. I’m still debating on whether or not to add snowflakes in the image, but one idea had been playing around in my brain and that was to show the camera.

I’m a little iffy on the black and white effect around the edges, but she loved it, so it stays. Again, if you want an image of your choice to be next, please make a suggestion. The best one will be next month’s muse.

This week I learned that all the driving skills I picked up in Germany years ago are still relevant. Namely how to negotiate the terrain on the ice planet Hoth. Stupid ice storm! I drove through it for four states. Fun times…

Anywho, for this image, I’m trying a few different techniques. I’m trying to be a little more versatile and its actually fun! Also, I’m making a LOT of new friends in the art world. Honestly, I think of my skillset as being in the lower 20%, but I’m on the ladder and climbing and getting better all the time. One day these images will be a four hour deal and I’ll move up to more realism. But since I grew up on comics and cartoons, it reflects in my style.
