Unobtainium

You know that it’s going to be an interesting week when it starts with a phoenix in the sky. Good news? Only time can tell…

A project being completed should be cause for happiness, but this picture of Alucard from Hellsing is about closing the books. A friend who passed away recently loved the character, so I did this. Cried a little.

That’s okay.

Then immediately started another picture on sort of a dare. Someone claimed hyper realism on a picture they drew and I…disagreed. Not in a bad way, mind you. Just pointed out some places where the guy missed the mark.

Well, he flipped out, called me a hater and worse, gave me the old “if you knew anything about art…”. Ugh!!

So I reverse Google searched the image, found the pic, sat down and made it in about two hours.

And I posted it in our art group. With time stamps.

I guess I wanted to make a point. I’m pretty sure I did; he shut up and tried to get me blocked by admin! She read the thread and decided that since he had requested critiques and comments, nothing I’d done warranted being kicked out.

Also, I got the same response. It’s the art world.people are going to disagree with what you’ve done, how it’s done, WHY it’s done. You gotta roll with it and you can always tell who to listen to and who to nod politely at.

We’re all trying to get better at creating.

Break[me]

I’ve already made EIGHT images this year! Didn’t even realize it until someone else told me. It’s gotta be a new record for me.

All of themare improvements over what I was doing at this point last year. I guess practice makes perfect after all.

In the interest of full disclosure, the end of last year required me to spend a few days checked into my favorite mental health center. I’m okay now. I’ll always fight to be okay. It’s my only real job: living.

Last time you guys got to see the early version of my pricelist. A few of the upper range things changed; their price points were slightly off. But overall, I’ve gotten pretty positive feedback. The commission list is almost full for this month, with more work planned for next month. Dare I dream?…

My life isn’t quite where I want it to be, but at this point its just a matter of tweaks. My business plan and life plan are on track and as long as I keep my PTSD and isolation in check, you guys can expect a better level of art.

So if you have any questions, comments or requests, pass them along! You guys have been here for the ride and hopefully the finish line for this level is in sight 😊.

I wish you peace and prosperity in the New Year.

the Void

image

I had to lie to my mom yesterday. I won’t bore you with the details. The gist of what I told her was that I’m fine.

image

It’s kind of true though. I’m as well as a person who has had a piece of their soul forcibly torn off can be. Perfectly functional.

      Except when I’m not.

image

It was during a “not” period that I found myself watching Kill Bill vol1 and becoming interested in the character Gogo Yubarai. Something about her violently teetering on the brink of madness made her incredibly desirable to me. So I decided to draw her.

image

I have to admit, I am becoming a lot better at rendering hair in this format. I wish that were a uniform thing but alas, it’s not. Oh well…

image

In the end I placed the silhouette of Beatrice behind her. Why? She represents her passage from madness to true release. Her own angel of Death to the lands beyond, where what was lost can truly be forgotten.

    Rough week.

Reverse Joy

image

Try not to take things personally. I had a friend of mine share an old picture in which she was laying down in the tub.

image

I’ve done something sort of like this before, but this time I decided to leave the character human. I wasn’t sure about it, so I made this thumbnail.

image

Of course, it evolved a little as it went. The hair was easy since I’ve drawn in a comic book style before. It was creating the underwater effect that took a little consideration. Still, this was the time to try things out.

image

Don't fear fuck ups

I wanted her to appear innocent so I had to change her expression a tad…

image

….but in the end it felt close to what I want my final image to be. In the meantime, I hope you like the thumbnail!  I’m leaving them all over my hometown ☺

Everything Needed

image

Last week, I showed you how far I’d gotten but not the steps before. Yeah a lot of things change when you’re working on a picture. For example…

image

image

In the earlier versions, something kept bothering me. Once I began shading it came to me; her left I seemed wonky! Now, I could have went back to the beginning and redress it on that layer, but instead I simply erased it.
Using the magic lasso(W), I drew a selection around the other eye, then copy merged the area. Make sure you choose copy merged from the edit menu, otherwise it will only copy the selected layer of art!
After you paste a new copy, move it to the area. While still highlighted, go into your transform set and choose ‘flip horizontally’. This will create a mirror image of the other eye. Of course, it can’t look exactly the same, so I recommend using your skew and rotate functions to align it properly and scale it correctly. In my case, I had to select the pupil, move it to create the illusion of looking forward and then shade the area.

image

She looked a little like Popeye before I fixed her eye...

Remember, the most important part of your image is the linework proceeding the actual coloring. However, if you make a mistake, you can always fix it.  That’s all for me, I gotta get back to drawing!

Keeping it Fake

image

How much Portishead can you listen to until you need to hear Culture Club?  No Wham though, that stuff was too angsty. Oops, did I just date myself?

Seriously, though, I’ve been put in charge of making video graphics at work! Hope I do well…

Racer S, part 1

image

Annnd we’re off! Really looking forward to this all week as I began work on a new piece. I decided to give it a little of the speed racer feel and driving skills not withstanding,  make the talent into a born driver. So I worked on a pose to give her that dynamic quality of being girly, yet ready for action.

image

It still has to look like our lovely model, even in this new position so I create a matrix of her face and body to get the proportions correct. This will help later in case I want to make slight adjustments to her expression. Some of you already know the drill;  head is 5 eyes wide, eyes are in center of total headspace, edges of mouth intersect center of eyes and ears are eyebrows to nose. That’s the mathematical representation of human symmetry and beauty!

image

No driver is ever the same without their awesome ride! Unfortunately, I forgot to save this image until I had already started line work! I HATE doing that part; I have nerve damage to my hands and it involves a lot of smooth flowing lines. Still, it has to be done and all the erasing is worth it in the end. As you can see,  I’m grouping each aspect of the image individually.  That way any changes I need to make to individual sections can be accomplished without changing the whole. Smart, huh?

image

This is the overall effect. Some aspects will change as I tweak the image, but for the most part, I’ve got a good base. Some design elements will clearly need to be addressed;  I reversed the image and it felt a little clunky with the flag. However, I’m happy with the design and when complete, some cute little muse is going to have an awesome poster or t-shirt! For now though, there’s a lot of line work to do,  so enjoy your weekend!
