I’m back from LA. I did not have a great time. Suffice to say, fewer co-workers would have resulted in more fun.

It took some effort, but I managed to make time for some art. It was a huge challenge and it definitely cut into some much needed sleep; but I really wanted to stay active.

After a Miserable week, I finally flew home in time for the last day of NOVAcon!! A friend of mine had a booth their to sell copies of his book. We had an awesome time, even though I was running on fumes by then!

Of course I gave Chris the custom piece of art that I made of one of his characters. Which led to me sitting in his booth drawing Cosplay of some people! Everyone was awesome and encouraging. It was a great experience.

Sorry, booth lighting wasn’t the best, lol

The entire thing made up for a really lackluster trip. I’m glad I went.

It’s Raining Bricks

So…I bore easily. Really, REALLY easily and art has always been the way I daydream. It allowed me to create whole worlds and explore trains of thought otherwise denied to me. I couldn’t imagine NOT having the ability; it is my mutant power after all.

But I did lose it. Which should have been a sign that I’d lost myself as well, but I didn’t notice in the mess that my sanity was becoming. In the end I lost everything I cared about and did some inpatient time in a mental care facility.

Yeah, not my best moment. But it doesn’t even make the top ten list, so no worries.

One of the things that they offered me, besides a lot of pills, was a chance to draw. They were stunned at what I could do; so was I, having almost completely forgotten. By degrees, I rebuilt me. By hand.

You could say art saved me. I regained my sense of self. Accepted a new role with my family. Got a new job. I turned it around.

Art was there when I was down and out. Now I draw everyday. I have customers, which I still find weird, hahaha. I’m content.

No happy ending. But my happy place is only a thought away.

Man, work has been hectic lately! I have so many projects that I’ve started locking my door and yelling “NO!!” when I hear a knock! All in an attempt to catch up on no less than 8 projects, with 3 due this week!

Of course I can’t go that long without drawing something, so this piece was the result. It stems from a memory. And while it looks like a fun one, I came home that evening to a break up letter. So in every sense “leaving” is a suitable title.

It didn’t rattle me though. While I was sad, I already had antibodies for sudden breakups. So I rode that wave and refuse to dwell on it.

Ok, markers are getting a LOT easier

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Confused Yet

It’s been an interesting week so far.I’m responsible for hiring a guy to do a one day job. In the interim, I learned that all of the companies that I freelance with charge a LOT. But they don’t pay it. Hmmmm…
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. However, the search has hurt my attempt at finishing anything this week!  Commissions based on cosplay is a slow process. Bodybuilders actually pay better, which is funny because everyone in cosplay think they’re models and no one in bodybuilding does. So it ends up making me lopsided in my work. However, the cosplay set WILL let you take a photo or even pose them. Very helpful.

Infinite Ability, Finite Time

Hopefully,  today is a day where you remember your heritage and the little Italian slave who went on to bring Christianity to the emerald isle. For the rest of you?

     Don’t get too drunk.

I’m starting to wonder if I’m approaching the upper limit of my stress threshold. Lately my chest has had sporadic twinges of pain. I would have ignored it when I was younger, but now it worries me, so I’m going to get a check up.

Walked into my edit suite and found a box under my desk. Apparently it’s been decided that I need a new computer, without checking to see if it’s true. The actual truth is worse; I edit on a Mac and no one else knows how to use it! Plus I’m on Premier Pro, so they’re switching me to Avid. That way a certain employee can use my raw footage. sigh….

Finally, I’m getting my insurance check to fix my house! My ex has been really helpful. IT MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

         Ok, deep breath.

Hey guys!  It’s going to be an awesome week for me. I took up the challenge of creating a color image with multiple themes. Since I haven’t done this before, I figured, “why not?”. Yes I’m a dumbass. Oh well…

The themes were a servant, night lights,  reflection, perspective and a landscape. So the kid in me figured Silver Surfer on his board looking down on the nightside of earth, staring at our cities. Bam! Combo!

So far, I’d gotten most of the way when I was reminded (well, told) that I needed to finish the digital piece I’d started. Makes sense.

For an added bonus, the hand of Galactus!

After a little more work,  it turned out pretty nice.  Of course, the talent is the real arbiter of it’s value, but sense I almost never draw background stuff,  I was pleasantly surprised. All this while listening to enough Evanescence to kill almost anyone. I worked harder at playing this weekend than my actual job!

        Man, I miss work.

Work v Play

My supervisor seems to have a small issue with my screendisplay. He thought it was from Pandora, the movie. After I stopped laughing,  I explained that it was actually a friend whose image I altered in Corell Draw some years ago. When asked why, I told him that she reminded me of the Lady Dorma, a character in the old Submariner comics.

Sometimes it’s easy to see where the journey with a character will take you. You’re just looking for a person to fit the theme. Other times, I’ll see someone and start fantasizing a complete backstory…

I guess what I’m trying to say is that this is going to be a shut-in type of weekend.
