Fudge It

My son is back in Afghanistan. He took leave and we took a pretty fun roadtrip. I miss him already.

Anyway…

Things have been… interesting. My art life has been somewhat quiet. I have a few projects lined up, but without a deposit, I don’t start, so that’s a non issue.

Plus I found out that Staedtler discontinued the pencil I use to sketch out my art! I suppose I could just buy an 8H pencil, but I tend to lose the color with my vision issues. Oh well, something will come up.

In the meantime, I’ve resorted to colored pencils. They tend to shade really heavy and it requires me to use a more delicate touch. NOT my forte, lol.

Also… I’ve had a few people complain that I don’t draw many PoC (People of colour). The reason is…

…they don’t ask. Or I don’t post.

My paying customers often ask for a still life from a photo and the biggest hesitation comes from the concern that I’ll post the image. Of course I don’t. I have more than enough who don’t care, lol. And some are made up.

For some reason, most of the ones who say hell no are black.

Now one lady gave me an ENTIRE FOLDER of nudes to use! She only asked that I make a poster for her. Deal.

Day by Night

Sorry guys. It’s been an interesting week for me. I suffered a scratch on my cornea somehow in my sleep! I get to wear a fun eyepatch. Needless to say, the art may be wonky, haha.

I still think that I did pretty well. This one came from a photo provided by someone else. I had to buy a new gel pen for the hair, since mine was stolen.

I also drew a friend who was feeling a little down about her looks since she wears glasses now. Oh well, it could have been an eyepatch, lol.

Hardship

I got a little further on my Silver Surfer image today. Laying down all the base reflective surfaces in his chrome, with the clearing work to come. I’m happy with it, but I actually had someone ask me about the color swirl he was looking at.

“It’s a blackhole’s event horizon.”, I answered.

Then ended up watching them Google it as they tried to argue with me. I just put my earphones back on.

Okay… this is my third drawing of the actress who played GoGo Yubati in “Kill Bill”. I need to get her out of my system. She’s like Amy Winehouse that way, lol.

When I draw her, I try not to make her appear demure. Too much of that going on among artist as is. It gets attention, but then so does a stick figure with circles for boobs. You never know what people are REALLY into when you sex it up.

My style causes me trouble occasionally. Like when I mix genres.

I started this out in the usual way, but I knew that I would ink over a lot of it. No biggie.

However, when I started to do so, I realized that the tones weren’t dark enough. I had to go back and deepen it.

So it worked out, but not the way I wanted. There’s a lesson here.

Do your homework.

Misplaced

So… I got kicked out of a Facebook group. I had a blank lunch and decided to draw a few cars. So I posted a request for pictures on a thread. I got a bunch of replies and started doodling away!

Then suddenly, I couldn’t add them. And I was no longer in the group. Understand; I didn’t charge anyone. And I only drew cars for a short while. Oh well…

I did this one for a daily drawing page. Honestly I went a little overboard with the skirt, lol. I try to draw these for time, so they aren’t always my best. Do you recognize the character? Because I’ve drawn her before…

Now this one is of a lady that I find to be funny and honest. She’s a fitness trainer, but you’d never know it looking at her. Then she flexes and BOOM! Muscles out of nowhere, lol.

I HATE using pencils with my prismacolor markers! For one thing, the stupid lead is easily absorbed into the brush tip, completely ruining it. At $6.99 a marker that SUCKS.

Sometimes using a rag to brush off the excess works…

Sometimes.

I used to do pallets for these and still do, usually. But I have enough experience with certain skin tones that it’s unnecessary. Besides, I gave myself a 30 minute time limit. I’m training myself to make videos and I’m trying to keep the time down. So get ready!

So, when I was done, I presented her my picture and she LOVED it! That’s a really awesome feeling. Vindication!!

At least she didn’t kick me out of her group.

Halloween

I made it! A buttload of pictures were completed for #inktober! Including a very special one…

So, it’s never come up but I have a couple of wily and fun ginger sisters in my life. I’ve drawn them before as Jean Grey and Dark Phoenix; it seemed appropriate, given the personalities involved. But one of them REALLY loves Halloween. So… I made her the Goblin Queen!

I started out with a couple of thumbnails to get the design I wanted.

Then I did a rough sketch. This is when I decided to add a pet goblin. A queen needs her subjects!

After doing a clean line version of my image and choosing a pallet, I begin coloring, doing the leather and skintones first.

Next came the cape. If you know the character, you know her original design by Marc Silvestri was very sketch and tattered looking. I didn’t want to go THAT far, but still wanted to stay in the spirit of the original.

Next I added some background accents. I was going to make it feel a little more Dante at first, with suffering souls and all that. But I decided against it.

Finally I added an appropriate sidekick and made sure all of the focal light fell on the main character.

My friend was really happy with her gift. But I’m no dummy. I have to draw the other one soon. They ARE sisters after all.

Double for Something!

Just when you thought I’d posted for the week, BAM!! This time I decided to show you guys a picture I made for fun. I do that a lot, don’t I?…

Anyway, this one is to snub my nose at someone who told me that they hated all the ” muscled up dudes in bras” that I draw. Hey what can I say? I’m a contrarian.

Because of that, all I heard was “don’t do that!”. And because of THAT… you get this.

So to recap; I love all women. Amazing, interesting and my drug of choice 😉. But I draw strong women because they’re strong women.

    Okay?

More Good News for Bad News

My time for art has been rather tight lately. If I’m not doing stuff like the image above for clients, I’m editing videos and doing photography. It all adds up, so I try not to think of it as work. That would kill the vibe, lol.

In the meantime, it’s always a joy to find an hour or two for my own personal projects. This weekend was such a break. I went to my local Starbucks, sat down and begin this picture. Actually had a guy get upset when he was informed that the person in the picture was a girl. Silly dude, strong girls rock!

So since this is the month for it, expect a few more strong women 😉

Girls Own My World

image

What an opening declaration, huh? Well it’s true. Maybe it’s my southern upbringing but I tend to be more tolerant and patient with them. Guys catch hell with me but the ladies? Not so much.

image

This is NOT an unlimited ticket however.

I’m amazed at how often I receive derogatory comments about the women I choose to create or draw on my daily commute. “Why don’t you draw REAL women?” They’ll demand of me, as if my ability only receives validation through their option.

image

The truth is I pretty much create what I want. Like most men I have a type; confident, smart, funny and loving. But I also feel I’m those things with a nice helping of stubborn on the top.

image

I tried to portray that in this picture of Wonder Woman I made. She’s all those attributes in one made up person to me.

image

I feel that’s what a cosplayer who is in her character is trying to display about herself. Just like Harley Quinn exists in the land of broken dolls, Diana is a more mature, fully realized woman, more confident in her sexuality and identity.

image

So yeah, when I draw women I tend not to just draw sexpots. I try to give them the depth they deserve, sometimes succeeding, sometimes not.  But at the end of the day MY prize is when a woman tells me she likes the way I render her gender. What can I say?  They own my world 😉
