Whys and Wherefores

image

I’m not sure why, but I took a little time to visit family down south. It’s not a regular habit; I’m there maybe twice a year. This trip though seemed… fun.

image

So this picture is of a particularly fabulous cosplayer named mazikeen mornstar. If you ever read Vertigo’s “Lucifer” series, you’ll get it. She was EXTREMELY happy about it.

image

I usually get two or three people asking me to do this for them. Honestly I have to be motivated as well, so it rarely happens.

image

But this time I’m glad I did, because her reaction made it worthwhile. Again, I don’t do it often, but I think now I’ll offer it more freely.

image

Because the character has one side of her face ruined, I kept the theme. It was risky because you never know how some people will take something like that. She was a real trooper! Next time, let’s REALLY push the envelope….

Noooooooope!

image

Just having a little fun with a friend who was tired of getting hit on. Had to pretend to be her guy and the jerk demanded we kiss! So I offered to kiss him in the mouth with my fist. Nuff said…he left.

I don’t remember being that clueless and desperate when I was younger. Of course I AM me, lol…

I sold this picture while working on it, riding the train! Isn’t that crazy? The lady in the seat directly behind me watched me create it and asked if she could purchase it. I was so happy!

Now I’m not so sure it was the right thing to do.

She could have easily had me create a commission piece. This was an attempt at speed work. So it has flaws. But if she enjoyed it, that shouldn’t matter, right?

    Right?

It [doesn’t] Hurt

image

Man it’s been plenty cold this week. I’ve been living on the road, working. Hotel time is drawing time, so I decided to do something to remind me of warmer climes.

image

I’m getting better at drawing bodies at off angles. Practice helps, right?

image

Again I use a three color process to set up my images. It helps me see what I have in mind and brings it out.

image

There! Now I feel a little bit better. Sorry I didn’t write a whole lot about it, since I’m working offsite this week. Too bad I can’t be in Miami!

Reverse Joy

image

Try not to take things personally. I had a friend of mine share an old picture in which she was laying down in the tub.

image

I’ve done something sort of like this before, but this time I decided to leave the character human. I wasn’t sure about it, so I made this thumbnail.

image

Of course, it evolved a little as it went. The hair was easy since I’ve drawn in a comic book style before. It was creating the underwater effect that took a little consideration. Still, this was the time to try things out.

image

Don't fear fuck ups

I wanted her to appear innocent so I had to change her expression a tad…

image

….but in the end it felt close to what I want my final image to be. In the meantime, I hope you like the thumbnail!  I’m leaving them all over my hometown ☺

It’s.#inktober! So for this month, I have to do a drawing in pen, marker or ink of some type everyday.

image

Of course,  I’m not going to post each and every one,  though you’ll probably end up seeing them all. Plus it never hurts to practice a bunch…

image

Its been tough though. First I injured a finger on my drawing hand.It became all swollen and discolored. The pain wasn’t too bad,  but I hated doing anything with it.

image

Then my roof fell in in my kitchen! Apparently it had been built wrong to start with and came down with a crash. I’m scrambling now to install a new one.

image

Despite all of the nonsense, I cranked out a picture a day without fail. More to the point I’m learning how to streamline my process.

image

So that’s it for now. I’m learning a lot about the business side of art as well. Hopefully I will be able to put it to use soon!

Brand Loyalty

image

It takes a lot of patience and effort to keep your life on track. Lately I’ve had to readjust some priorities, but the good news is that my art gained more consideration.

image

After visiting Artists Alley at Comic-Con,  I received a lot of support. I really didn’t expect it;  I had professional artists telling me I should be one of them! Vindication; don’t knock it until you receive it, am I right?

image

Anyway I’m supposed to be doing a calendar for next year. I’m pretty stoked.
Wish me skill, not luck. I’m gonna need it!

Metal on Metal

image

So whenever I have to deal with the public (i.e. humans) I become a nervous wreck. It’s not that I lack confidence; they are mostly slow and unsure themselves. It makes for difficult interactions when you realize that the person is afraid of you.

image

Ok, maybe a shave and haircut and smile would help...

That makes it extra special when someone says yes! So I met a wonderful young lady who bravely agreed to let me photograph her for a drawing.

image

The entire thing was done during the train ride and presented to her. She was ecstatic!  Plus I received a lot of comments about it. A good day all around.
Now I need to do a little portfolio padding. So I’m going to be doing more complete images, including backgrounds. Here we go!

Happy customer!

Insulted by Kindness

It’s Friday! You can find comfort in knowing that I’ve been busy,  but not overworked this week. I’m trying to be better.

image

The best part of this month is that my son comes home from Afghanistan! I’m really happy and hope we still get along. You never come back the same person. I know.

The nerves at least are better.
